ICWF 2011: Ann Arbor

From The Score to the First Rehearsal

In this uniquely structured workshop, Gustav Meier, together with Don Schleicher and Benjamin Loeb, will examine how the conductor learns a score and prepares to implement the desired interpretation from the first rehearsal to the concert. Hosted by the Kerrytown Concert House, the 13 3- hour sessions will include conducting a small ensemble (string quintet and piano), discussion sessions, and video review. Topics will be based on sections and excerpts form the book "The Composer, the Score and the Conductor".  Conducted repertoire will be primarily excerpts chosen from the standard orchestral literature for their technical and musical challenges.  Conductors will not be expected to prepare complete works.

All Participants and Auditors will receive a copy of Gustav Meier's book, "The Score, the Orchestra and the Conductor" published by Oxford University Press.

Some of the topics covered will be:

• Analysis and sorting of the orchestration
• Rhythmic lay-out and common denominator
• Beat options including splitting beats and the search for their effectiveness
• Death to the bar line and to patterns
• "The Zig-zag Way" (a preparation of conductors "fingering")

Accommodations and Food:

Accommodations can be arranged at a nearby Microtel for $50/night.  These accommodations may be shared to reduce cost.  Shuttle service between the hotel and the workshop will be provided.

Lunch will be provided every day of the workshop and there will be a dinner/reception on the last day.
